Warning signs of parturition

Warning signs of parturition

Warning signs of parturition

Your "pregnant" cat is bleeding

These are not to be confused with blood-stained urine, which could indicate a urinary tract infection. It is not normal for your cat to have vaginal bleeding during gestation. Either your cat is losing her pups, or she gives birth prematurely, if this happens around the 8th week. In the latter case, a caesarean may be necessary.

NB:
In all cases, have your cat examined by the veterinarian as soon as possible.

Your cat has contractions, but the kittens don't go out

If your cat has had strong contractions for more than an hour, without expelling a kitten, she needs help: a veterinary consultation is urgently needed. Take with it any kittens already born.

Your cat retains placenta

Part of the placenta needs to be expelled for each kitten birth, so it's important to count them. If the mother retains the placenta, she may develop an infection, a fever, or lose her appetite. If you believe this to be the case, you should urgently consult your veterinarian.

Your cat has leaks

Flows are normal up to three weeks after parturition. These discharge are usually black or reddish, and are mainly composed of blood.

If the discharge seems very strong or appears purulent (possible uterine infection), have your cat examined urgently by your veterinarian.

You have doubts ?

As far as your pet is concerned, the golden rule is to consult your veterinarian if in doubt. If, during parturition, you feel that something is wrong (prolonged efforts without expelling kittens, bleeding, or smelly or colorless discharge), do not hesitate to call your veterinary clinic.

How to feed a cat that has just "given birth"?

During gestation (pregnancy), the cat may need special feeding. After giving birth (parturition), she will normally produce milk, and that too will require energy. Some people offer their cats a diet based on kibble for baby cats, richer in minerals and proteins, during gestation; but it is best to seek advice from your veterinarian, who can direct you to the most suitable cat food formula.

Puppies, on the other hand, will be fed by their mothers at first. Then you can offer them a tailor-made kitten feed.
