Cat diseases
Cat diseases can have various origins and more or less serious consequences. If you have any doubts about your companion's state of health, do not hesitate to contact your veterinarian.Cat urinary stones or feline urinary syndrome
Commonly, this disease is called cat cystitis. It results in frequent urination and severe pain. The cat more often goes to its litter box and shows signs of pain when it pees until it sometimes screams.
Sometimes there is a little blood in the litter. The urethra (the small duct that allows the bladder to empty) can become blocked.
The cat is then unable to urinate, its kidneys can no longer function properly and its health deteriorates very quickly. If you notice these symptoms, do not wait and see your veterinarian urgently.
The most common cause of cystitis in cats is calculus like struvite. The risk of calculus formation can be limited by foods that promote acidic urine.
Acidifying foods are not recommended for older cats (over 10 years) or kittens whose urine is naturally acidic and it is better to give them a specific diet.
The main viral diseases of cats?
- The rabies of the cat
This viral disease results in disorders of the nervous system: abnormal behavior, aggressiveness, inability to swallow ... Incurable and fatal, it can be transmitted to humans.Vaccination of your cat made compulsory by the law of December 26, 2007 for cats traveling outside French territory is an effective way to prevent rabies. Ask your veterinarian.
- Cat typhus
Very contagious, this viral disease causes diarrhea, vomiting, fever and very high mortality especially in kittens. A treatment exists, but it only works if it is early. Vaccination is very effective.
- The cat's coryza
Runny nose and eyes, sneezing, fever, ulcerative lesions of the mouth ... These are the signs of this viral disease.Untreated, coryza can get complicated and cause purulent discharge from the eyes and nose, and even pneumonia. Vaccination helps protect cats and kittens from the most virulent viruses.
- Feline leukosis
It is a virus that causes tumors and blood diseases. The period between infection with the virus and the onset of clinical signs can last for several years. The infection is made by contact with animals carrying the virus which do not necessarily express the disease. A blood test allows your veterinarian to determine if your cat is carrying the virus.
It is not recommended to leave healthy, carrier animals together. A vaccine exists, you can talk to your veterinarian.
- The Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (F.I.V)
Transmitted by biting, this non-transmissible virus causes humans an immunodeficiency syndrome very comparable to that encountered in humans. Incubation can be long, but a veterinarian can identify carrier cats.
- Feline Infectious Peritonitis (P.I.F)
This viral disease mainly infects cats in breeding or grouped in large numbers. The diagnosis cannot be established with certainty and there is no treatment today.
The only way to reduce the risk of contamination is to follow good husbandry practices advised by your veterinarian.
